€238 million to surf at 1 gigabit per second in 10 Emilia region cities
Open Fiber, jointly owned by Cassa depositi e prestiti Group and Italy’s biggest electricity producer Enel, continues its journey through Italy connecting the country with ultra-broadband internet. The company has reached the Emilia Romagna region.
Open Fiber will spend €238 million laying optic fiber cables to connect 70% of the homes and businesses in 10 Emilia Romagna cities: Cesena, Piacenza, Forlì, Ferrara, Rimini, Ravenna, Reggio Emilia, Imola, Modena and Parma. Work, set to begin by summer, will use existing infrastructure, and build fiber-optic ducts if needed.
The investment is the result of an agreement signed by the Emilia Romagna regional government; Lepida SpA, an in-house company created to design, realize and manage broadband infrastructures for the Emilia Romagna public administration, and Open Fiber.
Open Fiber aims spend almost €4 billion to bring high-speed internet over ultra-broadband infrastructure to 270 Italian cities by 2022.
